PhilCOCHED's Projects and Initiatives

Advocacy

The current advocacy activities of PhilCOCHED are focused on raising PhilCOCHED's profile and important programs of activity amongst the general public to raise awareness of disability issues.  Advocacy activities are also targeted to government agencies and other NGO sector organisations, promoting partnership and sharing our knowledge of issues related to disability in order to increase opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Inclusive Community Action Rehabilitation for Education (of children with disabilities) - I.C.A.R.E.

ICARE is a Community Based Rehabilitation programme developed to address the lack of inclusion of children with disabilities in to educational programmes in the Philippines. Its broad focus is on early rehabilitation interventions of children with disabilities since research has shown that early intervention improves a disabled child’s chances of being included in educational programmes later in life.

Inclusive Education

The Inclusive Education program was initiated in 2005 in response to a perceived need for a remodification of the current educational system for CWDs in the Philippines. PhilCOCHED began by organising a series of focus group discussions with local stakeholders (including parents of CWDs, teachers, community members and advocates) and the programme was built around the perceived needs of CWDs indicated by those community members.

Inclusive Youth Center

The Inclusive Youth Center (IYC) brings together both disabled and non-disabled young people in an inclusive youth organisation to create an enabling environment for young people. It aims to promote the rights of youth with disabilities towards their integration into mainstream society at the same time as educating non-disabled youth to become advocates for integration and to speak up for the rights of their counterpart young persons with disabilities.
