PhilCOCHED Cheshire Homes

The Philippine Council of Cheshire Homes for the Disabled (PhilCOCHED) began activities with the establishment of its’ first home for paraplegics in the early 1960s - Sinag Tala for boys, Quezon City, Metro Manila. Since that date, PhilCOCHED has evolved to become a nationwide organisation with 35 affiliate and member homes and services across the length and breadth of the Philippines with the majority of homes in the Metro Manila and North Luzon areas and several in Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. Of these 35 homes, 14 of which are Cheshire services. PhilCOCHED provides assistance to these affiliate homes in the form of technical support, resource generation, and providing additional relevant information and support. In addition PhilCOCHED represents these homes at regional and international platforms.

Support for Everyday Living Programme

The Support for Everyday Living Programme is the programme supporting the affiliate homes including a wide range of schemes and facilities for people of all ages and abilities. The Programme aims to provide not simply accommodation provision for persons with disabilities but in collaboration with other PhilCOCHED programmes, it also provides job placement, education and scholarship opportunities, cooperative opportunities, handicraft and product workshops, medical assistance, mobility aid assistance and sports and recreational activities.

In 2006, 8 homes were identified as being in most need of financial and material support in order to sustain their operations. The homes require further support in particular to provide basic medicines and commodities, financial resources for persons with disabilities to start up businesses, management skills training and other livelihood opportunities, For more information about how to donate to this or other PhilCOCHED programmes, please click here.
