| Environmentally Friendly Employment Support for Everyday Living Case Study By: Mary Grace Cabrera, Cheshire Services Project Coordinator
Delia M. Azul is 38 years old and a resident of Bahay Kahirup Cheshire Home, Manila, a residential women’s home for persons with disabilities. Delia had poliomyelitis (polio) as a child and as such is a wheelchair-user. She has limited movement in her fingers and hands however in spite of this she endeavours to be as independent as anyone else her age; she helps with the household chores including washing clothes and cleaning her quarters and more importantly she moves around freely and goes out to visit her friends and acquaintances.
PhilCOCHED’s Support for Every day Living Program in collaboration with the Economic Empowerment Program, and in partnership with Resikulo, Atbp, the National Solid Waste Management Commission of the DENR, embarked on a series of trainings for Delia together with other fellow residents of Bahay Kahirup. During the trainings, conducted by a local bead jewellery trainer Ms Annie V. Faraces, residents were shown how to make handicrafts and jewellery using recyclable materials with a view to selling the finished products for profit. The most successful products produced were the accessories made out of papers and magazines and PhilCOCHED handles the marketing of the products.
This venture is expected not only to enable the residents of the home to become productive and earn a decent living, but it also campaigns for the use of environmentally friendly products and the benefits of reusing and recycling waste. |
